Some students live for parties. Some are dedicated to studying. And some, like Fandom High’s Kara Thrace, are committed to sports.

"Pyramid is what I live for,” says Kara. This is a traditional game where she comes from.

"It's a sport, played with varying amounts of people. It's played on a small court with ball which can fit in your hand. Basically, you have to get the ball into the basket without taking more than three steps.”

Pyramid bears some similarities to our local game of basketball, but unlike basketball, where the touching of another player is enough to call “foul,” Pyramid is a full contact game. A player who is tackled must pass the ball.

Kara’s dedication to the game of Pyramid gave her the potential to become a professional player.

“She’s a [very] good Pyramid player,” says her friend Anders, who also plays the sport. “There's a reason the CPL sent scouts out to see her... She's really driven when it comes to things she takes seriously.”

Like many students at Fandom, Kara doesn’t come from this world. Her home planet is called Caprica. It’s one of twelve colonies.

"The colonies were once separate planets with their own governments, but 40 years ago ... were were all united under one government,” explains Kara.

“Sometimes we talk about a Thirteenth Colony,” says Anders. “That would be Earth. Supposedly there was a thirteenth tribe that split off from the others and ended up here.”

The Colonies aren’t monotheistic like many Earth cultures. They worship gods known as the “Lords of Kobol” who bear names similar to those found in Earthly Greek mythology - Zeus, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite and others.

“They lived on a planet called Kobol with the ancestors of our race. Kobol's abandoned now, but that's where the people on the Colonies came from. There was a war. One of the gods tried to be greater than the others and that was when the war started between the gods and Kobol started to go downhill," explains Anders.

If their gods seem ancient to us Earthers, their technology is the opposite.

"You guys don't have space travel," Kara says. "We have ships that travel faster than light, and you guys can't even send a person to the next planet." And their coffee’s better.

Kara decided to come to Fandom High at her mother’s request. Her father is a musician and travels frequently.
